Background and Methodology:
The survey was designed to address the following report objectives:

  • To identify EHR market share by Vendor and Product in the U.S. for 2012.
  • To determine differences between the EHR product implemented and clinic size.

American EHR collected data through 1,429 surveys completed by physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012. The report breaks down market share by clinic size focusing on fivve different categories ranging from “Solo Practitioners” to clinics with 25+ clinicians. Within the size demographics, market share is further broken down by two methodologies: The first defines market share by individual survey response (one completed survey from one clinician represents one user and a single EHR location); the second is by clinicians associated with that survey (1 completed survey represents 1 EHR user of a 300-clinician practice and therefore 300 EHR users in one location). These distinctions illuminate a broader understanding of actual market share to the related size demographic of which both methods are included for each.

Insights gained include the following:

  • Practice Fusion holds the most market share (11%) within solo practices.
  • The dominant EHR vendor representing the most clinicians was Epic (46%) followed by Allscripts with 15%.
  • Top 10 EHR products will differ between clinic size demographics and will usually represent around half (50%) of that market share.
