Mobile Usage in the Medical Space Report

This report analyzes how physicians use mobile technology within their medical practice. It shows what smartphone features physicians are using and how often they use them. The frequency of smartphone activities are then broken down and compared between EHR and non-EHR users.

Background and Methodology:
The survey was designed to address the following report objectives:

  • To better understand health practitioners’ usage of technology in the medical space.
  • To determine how health practitioners use technology to interact with patients.
  • To assess health practitioners usage of smartphones in their medical practice.
  • To measure health practitioners satisfaction with, and likelihood to recommend the smartphone they use in their medical practice.
  • To determine if there are any differences in technology usage and demographics between physicians who have adopted an EHR and those who have not.

AmericanEHR collected data from surveys completed by 702 verified physicians within the US between October 10, 2012 and December 8, 2012 and in coordination with Insights West, produced this report. Contents include an in depth analysis on the frequency of different smartphone activities carried out for both personal and clinical purposes. The report also focuses on the frequency of other common technologies utilized within the practice. Insights include market share by smartphone brand with the associated satisfaction of both the mobile product and supported clinical and non-clinical apps. As an additional feature the report includes EHR user by age, region, time in practice and gender, based on respondent demographics to better understand mobile use adaptation.

Insights gained include the following:

  • 71% of EHR users and non-EHR users use their smartphones to research information about medications.
  • On average EHR users & non-EHR Users spend 15-16 hours on their smartphone each week.
  • One-quarter of non-smartphone users intend to buy a smartphone in the next six months
