AMA Survey on EHR Progress and Financial Impact in 2014

Since 2009, there has been a significant national effort to encourage the adoption and use of EHRs. A significant number of medical practitioners are now using EHRs which have had financial impacts on practices as well as effects on productivity, clinician satisfaction and patient outcomes.

In response to the need for credible information organized and presented by the medical profession, AmericanEHR Partners and the American Medical Association are collaborating to conduct an EHR satisfaction survey. It is well documented that cost—upfront and ongoing, in addition to usability and design issues, remain a barrier to EHR adoption and intended use. The immaturity of the EHR market and the challenge it presents to physicians in terms of workflow disruption and productivity remains an issue and a significant obstacle to achieving the promise of HIT and EHRs.

The revised AmericanEHR questionnaire was designed in close consultation with AMA, and input from stakeholders at the American College of Physicians, the Office of the National Coordinator, and through AmericanEHR’s society and clinical advisories.

New questionnaire topics include:

  • Economic impacts of EHRs on practices, namely Productivity, Billing and Reimbursement.
  • Use of scribes. What are the implications of time loss due to reporting standards within EHR systems?
  • Impact of communication between doctors and how it interferes with physician’s ability to deliver patient care.

The purpose of this survey is to support efforts that will lead to the refinement of EHRs according to industry best practices and subsequently promote more transparency in the vendor marketplace.

If you are a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner who uses an EHR in your clinical setting, we ask you to help your colleagues by providing feedback on your experience with your EHR. In particular, what the financial impact has been on you and your practice. To allow you to save and update your responses if necessary, you will be prompted to create a user account at the start of the survey.
