Updated EHR Incentive Program Payments: $2.5B+ So Far

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the latest statistics on Medicare & Medicaid payments to eligible professionals, hospitals, and critical access hospitals (through December 31, 2011). These data are reported here.

Through 12/31/2011, payments were as follows:

  • Medicare Only providers: $331M
  • Medicaid Only providers: $362M
  • Medicaid/Medicare Hospitals (Medicare payment): $1.0B
  • Medicaid/Medicare Hospitals (Medicaid payment): $787M
  • Total Payments: $2,533,689,145
  • Approximately 124,000 eligible professionals have registered under the Medicare incentives and 49,000 under the Medicaid program.

    The full set of slides presented to the Health Information Technology Policy Committee (HITPC) by CMS can be found here. Take a look at the Meaningful Use objective performances on slides 13–20 for EPs and EHs. Family practice, internal medicine, and optometry had the highest rates of CPOE. Not surprisingly, optometry and podiatry had the lowest rate of recording vital signs.
