The design of every waiting room, public and clinical space should be informed by the patients’ and visitors’ perspectives, and still meet the requirements for that particular health care environment. Many are not. Except for plastic surgery and some ob/gyns, many docs don’t have a clue what their waiting rooms look like. The ones that do have to get the buy in from the other partners in the practice on big expenditures. And then if the vote is in favor of renovation, they all want a say in the design – there might be 4 or 5 of them. Design by committee is never easy. Designing for a committee of MD’s with appropriately sized egos requires a certain ability to let a lot roll off the back. And take phone calls and meetings at odd times. The designer needs a really thick skin, like a turtle’s. Comes in very handy.
